In brief: Nicaragua

Nicaragua: Venders at Nicaragua’s biggest market, Mercado Oriental, which is located in the capital, Managua, have declared themselves to be in a state of civil disobedience in response to the continued crackdown by the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) government led by President Daniel Ortega on anti-government protesters. The most recent figures from the executive secretary of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), Paulo Abrão, released on 4 June, put the death toll since the violence began in mid-April at 127, with nearly 1,000 people injured. Comprising some 20,000 stalls, Mercado Oriental is the biggest market not only in Nicaragua but also in Central America. On 31 May the Nicaraguan academy of sciences (ACN) and the Nicaraguan academy of juridical and political sciences (ANCJP), both well respected institutions, called for civil disobedience, suggesting measures such as the withholding taxes until Ortega resigns.
