In brief: Venezuela

Venezuela: Transparencia Venezuela, the local branch of international anti-corruption NGO Transparency International (TI), has released a report regarding the contracts signed between Brazilian construction firm Odebrecht, which has admitted to paying millions of US dollars in bribes to government officials across Latin America, and the Venezuelan governments led by the former president Hugo Chávez (1999-2013) and his successor, President Nicolás Maduro. In its report, the NGO identified a total of 33 works and 40 contracts signed between various government ministries and Odebrecht but said tht it had only obtained copies of nine contracts and important information regarding 18. Transparencia Venezuela points out that while other governments in the region have been impacted by the corurption scandal, to date there has not been a single government official sanctioned nor exonerated in Venezuela – indicative of the lack of progress or efforts to investigate. According to the initial reports from the US Department of Justice (DOJ) released in late December 2016, as part of a regionwide bribery scandal, Odebrecht paid an alleged over US$98m in bribes to government officials in Venezuela from 2006-2015.
