In brief: Paraguay

Paraguay: The national congress, in an extraordinary bicameral session, has elected former supreme court justice Alicia Pucheta as the country’s new vice president. Pucheta assumes a post that became vacant following the resignation of former vice president Juan Afara last month to assume a seat in the new legislature that is due to be installed in July after he won election to the senate for the ruling Asociación Nacional Republicana-Partido Colorado (ANR-PC) party in the 22 April general election. Pucheta’s election by congress came despite the objections by the political opposition, which accuses Pucheta of being a lackey of outgoing President Horacio Cartes and party to his plans to assume an active senate seat in the new legislature, despite opposition complaints that this would be unconstitutional. Pucheta was nominated to fill the vice-presidency by Cartes. The opposition believes that she was handpicked by Cartes on the understanding that she would not to stop him from assuming an active senate seat in July, which would require him to step down as president beforehand. However, despite the opposition’s misgivings, Pucheta’s nomination was backed by the majority ANR-PC bench in congress, making her Paraguay’s first female vice president.
