In brief: Argentina

Argentina: The energy ministry has announced that the government led by President Mauricio Macri has reached an agreement with some of the leading energy firms that currently operate in Argentina, under which they have agreed to freeze all petrol fuel prices until July. A ministerial statement said that the deal had been reached with the state-owned oil firm YPF, Royal Dutch Shell, and Pan American Energy and that it should help to alleviate the negative impact that the increase in international oil prices and the depreciation of the Argentine peso against the US dollar have had on petrol fuel prices in Argentina. The announcement of the new price control agreement also comes as the Macri government continues to try to reduce the high domestic inflation rate and to stop the apparent freefall of the peso, which has been rapidly losing value against the US dollar in recent days amid concerns that the Macri government is failing in its attempts to keep inflation under control. Following the signing of the agreement, the energy ministry has urged all other fuel suppliers to adhere to it.
