In brief: Brazil

* Brazil's President Michel Temer has said that the minister for national integration, Antonio de Pádua, will help rehouse victims of a fire that destroyed a 24-storey building in the cit of São Paulo on 1 May.  Around 400 squatters were thought to be living in the building, located in the central Largo do Paissandu square. So far, one person has been reported missing. The incident highlights the acute housing shortage in areas like São Paulo which has forced low-income families to live in precarious accommodation. Firefighters said the building, which was once a police headquarters, had no fire protection. It was built from flammable materials like wood, paper and cardboard, and the elevator had been removed to form a kind of chimney which meant the flames could spread more quickly. The governor of São Paulo state, Márcio França, described the incident as a “tragedy foretold”. Asked about the state’s social housing provisions, he said the municipal and state governments had built more than 100,000 properties in recent years, but he acknowledged the need for more.
