Uruguay-Brazil: Chuy-Chuí border becomes new violence hotspot

A wave of organised crime-related violence has hit Uruguay’s border town of Chuy and its sister Brazilian town of Chuí. The murder of four people in fortnight in a suspected dispute between rival criminal groups has raised alarm and led the Uruguayan and Brazilian governments to reinforce security in the area. However, there are concerns that this is but the start of a new pattern of violence across the shared border, as local criminal gangs move from the traditional smuggling of good across the border to the smuggling of narcotics.
