Brazil: Heightened risk of electoral violence following Lula’s arrest

Lula da Silva is the first former president (2003-2011) to do jailtime for a common crime. Following a dramatic build-up, this month he began serving a 12-year prison sentence for money laundering and corruption. The arrest of such a popular leader divided opinion, increasing the risk of radicalisation and violence ahead of the October general election.
