In brief: Bolivia

Bolivia: Bolivia’s President Evo Morales has authorised the construction of three new wind energy farms in San Julián, El Dorado, and Warnes, all municipalities located in the department of Santa Cruz, with the help of the Danish International Development Agency (Danida). The projects, which will cost €156.4m (US$191m), will be jointly financed by Danida and Bolivia’s state-owned electricity company, Empresa Nacional de Electricidad (Ende), each contributing €102.5m (US$125.1m) and €53.9m (US$65.8m) respectively. The farms will use wind to produce 108 megawatts (MW) of electricity for the Sistema Interconectado Nacional (SIN) electricity grid, which supplies electricity to Bolivia’s largest cities, through a high voltage substation of 115 kilowatts (KW). The San Julián farm is expected to generate 39.6MW with 11 wind turbines; El Dorado, 54,4MW with 15 wind turbines; and Warnes 14,4MW with four wind turbines. President Morales envisages the possibility of turning Bolivia into an electricity exporter to neighbouring countries, as the country’s domestic electricity production is expected to increase to 1,600MW in the next year.
