Trump visits US-Mexico border

Mexico: On 13 March, US President Donald Trump visited the US-Mexico border near San Diego, California, where he inspected the prototypes for his proposed border wall with Mexico. After inspecting the prototypes, President Trump stated that there were three or four prototypes that “might work”, expressing the importance of a see-through section for US officials to see over the border. Trump also claimed that he might come to an agreement with Mexico’s President Enrique Peña Nieto over Mexico paying for the wall, despite President Peña Nieto’s insistence that under no circumstances would Mexico agree to pay for wall. President Peña Nieto is due to leave office on 30 November and will be succeeded by the winner of Mexico’s 1 July presidential election. Trump has previously said that some Mexican presidential candidates are “not that great” but that he will continue to negotiate with the Peña Nieto administration to try reach an agreement. However, Trump’s visit to the border was greeted by a public protest on the Mexican side of the border organised by civil-society groups from Mexico and the US. Meanwhile Mexico’s economy minister, Ildefonso Guajardo, rejected the insinuations by Trump that paying for the border wall could form part of the renegotiation of the terms of the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) that are currently being discussed by Mexico, the US, and Canada. President Trump has threatened to pull the US out of Nafta if Mexico does not agree to pay for the wall. But Guajardo, the minister in charge of the Nafta renegotiations, has stated that: “Categorically, there is not, nor has been, nor will there ever be any relation between the negotiation of Nafta and the wall”.
