In brief: Mexico

*Mexico has become the first Latin American country in which the US-based technology firm Google LLC has launched its ‘Google Station’, a free public Wi-Fi internet service for developing countries. The Next Billion Users team at Google, which is in charge of rolling out the initiative, announced that along with Mexican Wi-Fi installer Sitwifi, 56 free Google Station high-speed Wi-Fi hotspots have been setup in public spaces such as airports, bus stations, and shopping centres across Mexico. According to Google, the aim is to expand the number of Google Station Wi-Fi hotspots to 100 around Mexico by the end of the year. Although a recent report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) showed that the percentage of households in Mexico with internet access rose from 30.74% in 2013 to 47.02% in 2016, an increase of 20m people, Mexico is still significantly behind other OECD countries in terms of internet access, and Google is confident that Mexico has a high potential for expansion of the Google Station programme. Mexico is the third country in which Google Station has been rolled out after India and Indonesia, and it is intended that the programme will expand into other developing countries.
