In brief: Mexico

* América Móvil, the Mexican telecommunications firm, has announced that it will present a legal appeal against the break-up plan of its local subsidiaries, Telmex and Telnor, proposed by Mexico’s federal telecommunications institute (IFT). As part of Mexico’s 2014-2015 telecoms reform, which seeks to break up the quasi-monopoly enjoyed by a few firms in the sector and promote increased competition, the IFT identified Telmex and Telnor as dominant telecom service providers in Mexico and ordered América Móvil to break up the businesses into smaller parts to promote competitivity. América Móvil presented a break-up plan last year but this has been rejected by IFT, which has presented a counter proposal and given América Móvil a period of two years to implement it. América Móvil has rejected the IFT plan and says that it will appeal against it in the local courts.
