In brief: Mexico

* Mexico’s iron and steel chamber (Canacero) has asked the Mexican government to adopt immediate and reciprocal measures if Mexican steel is affected by the import tariffs recently announced by the US. Canacero’s call comes after US President Donald Trump said on 1 March that his government will impose a new 25% tariff on steel imports and a 10% tariff on aluminium imports from certain countries in a bid to protect US producers. Trump said that the countries affected by the new measures would be revealed next week. But the announcement has sparked fears in Mexico that its steel industry may targeted. Meanwhile the announcements have produced concerns in the US that they could lead to a trade war with affected countries adopting reciprocal measures. All of this has been alluded to by Canacero, which has said that Mexico “will be forced to immediately respond with reciprocal measures” if its steel is subjected to US tariffs to protect its national industry.
