* Norwegian aluminium company Norsk Hydro has been ordered by the environmental department of Brazil's northern state of Pará (Semas) to lower its output at the Alunorte refinery (in the industrial park of Barcarena, Pará) by 50%. It follows an investigation by local courts that bauxite waste allegedly coming from Norsk Hydro had contaminated the local water supply. During a press conference held on 26 February, Brazil's environment minister, José Sarney Filho, voiced concerns about the company and called for the federal environmental regulator Ibama to carry out a full investigation.
