In brief: Venezuela

Venezuela: Venezuela’s opposition-controlled national assembly released a statement on 22 February condemning a proposal floated by the government earlier this week to move forward legislative elections from the end of 2020 to just two months from now on 22 April, alongside presidential elections. The statement described such a move as constituting a “coup d’état” as the constitution makes it clear that elected deputies serve for five years and the previous legislative elections were held in 2015. The statement warned that it would not be enough for the government-stacked constituent assembly to decree that the legislative elections should be advanced. It said that a change of this magnitude required a constitutional amendment followed by a national referendum.
