In brief: Mexico

A Mexican judge ruled the 19 February arrest in the US of José Alfredo Cárdenas, alias ‘El Contador’, a leading member of the Gulf Cartel, was illegal. It is not yet clear whether or not he has been released as a result of the decision. Prosecutors falsely claimed that he was arrested while speeding in Brownsville, Texas. But his defence showed videos proving that Cárdenas was forcibly removed from his house, which is illegal. Cárdenas’ arrest sparked clashes between members of the Gulf Cartel vying to take his place. The drug-trafficking organisation mainly supplies cocaine and marijuana to the US, but in recent years has also branched out to heroine and methamphetamines.
