Mexico: The ninth round of talks on the modernisation of Mexico’s free trade agreement (FTA) with the European Union (EU) concluded in Mexico City on 20 February. The Mexican economy ministry (SE) announced that five chapters had been concluded, including technical obstacles to trade, subsidies, trade in services, maritime transport, and anti-corruption measures. The SE said that cementing the “substantial advances” into a completed deal was a top trade priority. This is particularly true given the obstacles encountered in the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta). The ratings agency Moody’s warned yesterday that uncertainty surrounding the future of Nafta was affecting Mexico’s growth prospects. Mexico will host the seventh round of talks between 25 February and 5 March.
