* Ernesto Cordero, the president of Mexico’s federal senate, has warned Canada not to “fall into the trap” of signing a bilateral agreement with the US, to replace the current trilateral North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The three countries concluded a sixth round of NAFTA negotiations on 29 January, with little progress achieved on key issues. Kenneth Smith, the trade representative at Mexico’s embassy in the US and Mexico’s lead negotiator, said that he expects a “very difficult” seventh round of talks. During the recent 21st interparliamentary meeting between Canada and Mexico, hosted in Mexico City this week, Cordero spoke of the “promising future relationship between Canada and Mexico”, adding that their discussions “will form the basis for an even deeper relationship”. According to the local press, George Furey, the Speaker of the Canada’s senate, has dismissed the possibility of a bilateral agreement with the US that would exclude Mexico.
