* A representative for President Michel Temer admitted that the government’s landmark pensions reform will not go through in February. The need for congress to vote on a security bill to allow for military intervention in Rio de Janeiro means they cannot vote for a constitutional amendment under Brazilian law, said political affairs minister Carlos Marun. Now the pensions bill has been defeated, the leader of the chamber of deputies, Rodrigo Maia from centre-right party Demcratas (DEM), has drawn up 15 new economic measures by way of compensation.
