In brief: Uruguay

Uruguay: Independent agricultural producers from the ‘autoconvocados’ movement have launched a ‘national vigil’ and called for supporters to concentrate in 230 points around Uruguay to hold peaceful 30-hour demonstrations. The demos are aimed at pressuring the government to heed demands to alleviate some of the high costs faced by the agricultural sector. President Tabaré Vázquez previously met leaders of the country’s largest agricultural organisations, but refused to meet the autoconvocados arguing that they were not the sector leaders. Vázquez finally met autoconvocados representatives to hear their demands last week. However, the autoconvocados are determined to maintain the pressure on the Vázquez government until it offers solutions to their demands.
