In brief: Paraguay

Paraguay: The public works & communications ministry (MOPC) has called a meeting with representatives from the Asociación de Camioneros del Paraguay, the local lorry drivers’ union, to try to resolve the conflict caused by its recent decision to authorise from 20 February the circulation of long combination vehicles (LCVs) - double trailer lorries - from Brazil in the country. The MOPC said that the measure has been taken to help boost the local agricultural sector by reducing the transport costs for export crops such as soya. But the decision has been rejected by the union, which argues that its members will not be able to compete with the larger freight vehicles and that they will driven out of business by their Brazilian competitors. The Asociación de Camioneros del Paraguay launched a protest campaign under which it has used lorries to blockade roads around the country until the MOPC reverses its decision. The protest has led to concerns that there will soon be shortages of some products such as petrol fuel, milk, dairy, and beer in the capital, Asunción, and other major cities. A MOPC statement called on Asociación de Camioneros del Paraguay to meet with the deputy minister, Juan Manuel Cano, today (31 January) to discuss their complaints.
