Brazil: Arms trafficking remains a major issue in Rio de Janeiro

Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro state is one of the country’s most violent areas. Since mid-2017 there has been a significant increase in gun-related violence and murders in the state which has led the local authorities to declare a state of emergency and to a security intervention by the federal government. But despite this, the authorities in Rio de Janeiro have yet to effectively tackle the constant trafficking of firearms into the area that fuels this violence. This failure has been attributed to logistical and administrative shortcomings that must be resolved.
