* A former leader for Brazil’s Movimento dos Trabalhadores sem Terra (MST) landless workers' movement has been shot dead at the rural property where he was living in Iramaia municipality, in the north-eastern state of Bahia. Márcio Matos de Oliveira had been an influential figure within the MST, which is linked to the leftist opposition Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT). No motives have been given for the crime but Bahia state governor, Rui Costa (PT), said that the local authorities would carry out a full and rigorous investigation.
