* Representatives from Mexico’s livestock sector have called on the European Union (EU) to ease trade restrictions on products such as beef. The call was made by Salvador Alvarez Morán, the head of Mexico’s national confederation for livestock organisations (CNOG). It comes as Mexico and the EU are seeking to expand and update their existing bilateral trade agreement. Alvarez argued that Europeans want to export more agricultural products to Mexico while protecting the markets of the EU’s 28-member states. Currently, it is illegal for the EU to buy Mexican beef, but Alvarez argued that at least 50 tonnes should be allowed in. He called on the EU to re-evaluate the quality of Mexican meat, which he says already meets high entry requirements laid down by other countries such as Saudi Arabia and Russia.
