In brief: Peru

Peru: Peru’s President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski has conducted a major cabinet reshuffle in a bid to palliate the political crisis faced by his government following last month’s failed attempt by the opposition parties in the national congress to impeach him over the allegations linking him to the government corruption scheme centred around Brazilian engineering firm, Odebrecht. Kuczynski made nine changes to his 19-strong cabinet including at the helm of some key ministries such as the foreign affairs, labour, health, defence, and energy & mining portfolios. Describing the new cabinet as one for “reconciliation” Kuczynski said that he hoped that his new cabinet, which includes new opposition ministers, would help the country to move on from the political crisis which has been marked by his controversial decision to grant a presidential pardon to the disgraced former president, Alberto Fujimori - a move that has been widely seen as being part of a backroom deal between Kuczynski and the main opposition Fuerza Popular (FP, Fujimoristas) party to ensure his political survival in congress. However, some of the cabinet changes have been criticised by some opposition quarters as nothing more than an attempt to ‘bribe’ the opposition to try to win over its support.
