In brief: Uruguay

Uruguay: The office of the presidency has released its 2016 national energy sector balance report, which shows that for the first time in 52 years the amount of electricity produced by burning organic matter (biomass) was greater than the amount of electricity produced by the burning of oil derivative fuels. According to the report, the biomass electricity production accounted for 41% of Uruguay’s total electricity production in 2016, compared with 40% oil derivative fuel electricity production, 13% hydroelectric production, 5% wind electricity production, 1% natural gas electricity production, and 0.2% photovoltaic electricity production. The report notes that the shift in Uruguay’s electricity production matrix away from a reliance on fossil fuels and towards an increasing use of biomass fuel since 2007 has led to it now producing 59% of its electricity via ‘clean’ sources and only relying on fossil fuels to produce the remaining 41%.
