PERU: Human Rights in Peru – a long way to go

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid bin Ra’ad Zeid Al Hussein, has called on Peru to reinforce respect for human rights in support of a more sustainable economic development path. The call comes as Peru begins to recover its economic dynamism, recently overtaking Chile as the biggest supplier of copper to China. Successive Peruvian governments have summarily failed to deal with the issue of social conflicts around the extractives sector, as well as the protection of vulnerable social sectors, including not only indigenous communities but also women, in a country with one of the highest femicide rates in the world.
