* Federal judge Hilton Queiroz has overturned the
suspension of the PIS/Confins tax on petrol, diesel, and ethanol fuels decreed by the federal government, which had been issued by another federal judge last week. After analysing an appeal lodged by the government, Judge Queiroz ruled that his colleague’s previous decision to suspend the fuels tax increase would “only serve to aggravate the difficulties of maintaining public services”. A higher court will now determine the legality of the fuels tax increase, which has been criticised for allegedly violating the constitution.
