In brief: Peru, Colombia

Peru: The national congress has elected Luis Galarreta of the main right-wing opposition Fuerza Popular (FP) party as its new president for 2017-2018. Galarreta was elected with 84 out of 130 votes (79 of which came from the FP, the majority bench in the chamber). Galarreta replaces Luz Salgado, also of the FP, whose leadership of congress was characterised by difficult relations between the legislature and the Peruanos por el Kambio (PPK) minority government led by President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski. However, during his inaugural speech Galarreta said that from now on, relations between the executive and the legislature will be more “democratic and cordial”.
