Maduro talks the talk – but will he walk the plank?

Just five days before the planned elections for a new constituent assembly in Venezuela, urgent efforts were underway to walk back the process instigated by President Nicolás Maduro, so as to prevent a brutal spiral of violence in the country. The big question was whether heavily compromised radicals in government – intent on remaining in power at all costs – could be convinced. With press reports variously suggesting that Colombian guerrillas, paramilitaries, and criminal gangs were extending from Western border zones across into central Venezuela, there was also a question as to whether the widespread violence was now out of the control of either the authorities or the opposition, having taken on a dynamic, including criminal, all of its own.
