Just five days before the planned elections for a new constituent assembly in Venezuela, urgent efforts were underway to walk back the process instigated by President Nicolás Maduro, so as to prevent a brutal spiral of violence in the country. The big question was whether heavily compromised radicals in government – intent on remaining in power at all costs – could be convinced.
