BOLIVIA: Morales loses a key ally

Last month Economy Minister Luis Arce was forced to step down for health reasons. A close and trusted ally of President Morales, and the only cabinet minister to retain his post since Morales first took office in 2006, Arce is widely credited with the government’s continued sound management of the economy. Although replaced by deputy minister for pensions & financial services, Mario Guillén Suárez, who had worked alongside Arce for nearly a decade, his departure (albeit temporary) comes as the Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) government is facing key challenges – not least the corruption scandal to have shaken oil firm Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB), the country’s largest state-owned company, forcing its president Guillermo Achá to step down.
