Santos starts to say goodbye, calls for continued commitment to peace

“Fulfilling all the components of the peace agreement, as we have been doing and must continue doing, is a responsibility, a moral, political, and legal obligation that we have assumed before the world”, with these words, uttered at the opening of the 2017-2018 legislative period, President Juan Manuel Santos sought to urge the members of Colombia’s national congress to continue advancing with the implementation of the peace accord that his government signed with the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) guerrillas last year. Santos, who is now entering the last year of his second and final four-year presidential term, wants to cement what he would like to be his political legacy – the end of Colombia’s long-running internal armed conflict. But Santos is aware that the future of the peace deal will not be certain until congress approves all legislation linked to it, and its implementation is well underway before next year’s general elections.
