Five oil thieves killed during manhunt in Mexico

Development: In the early hours of 24 July five oil thieves, or ‘huachicoleros’, were killed in a clash with security forces in Mexico’s central state of Puebla, the state attorney general’s office (FGE) reported.

Significance: Illegal oil taps have been increasing at an alarming rate in Mexico over the course of the last five years. It took the death of 10 people, including four soldiers, in early May in violent clashes between a military patrol and thieves endeavouring to steal from a pipeline belonging to the state-owned oil firm Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), in one of the half a dozen municipalities that make up the so-called oil theft ‘red triangle’ in Puebla, to spur the authorities into action. The security forces have since sought to crack down on the illegal activity.
