Costa Rica: The security ministry has announced that coastguards have seized a tonne (t) of cocaine in the Pacific Ocean. According to reports in the local press, the drugs were discovered in various packages attached to a buoy in Costa Rican territorial waters during a routine patrol. The most recent US State Department’s International Narcotics Control Strategy Report (INCSR), released in March, notes that the Costa Rican authorities seized a total of 24.5t of cocaine in 2016, a 44% increase on 2015.
