Panama pledges security focus upon assuming Sica presidency. At the end of last month Panama took over the six-month pro-tempore presidency of the Central American integration system (Sica) from Costa Rica. Panama’s President Juan Carlos Varela declared that security would be a priority for the sub-region given new challenges such as “the increase in drug production in neighbouring countries” – a reference to the increase in coca plantation areas in neighbouring Colombia; US President Donald Trump’s proposed new actions for stopping illegal migration (such as the construction of a wall on the US border with Mexico and the stepping up of deportations from the US); and the “migration caused by the current situation in Venezuela”.
