Bolivia: Strengthening borders

This month Bolivia’s interior minister Carlos Romero revealed that the national police leadership had presented a plan to President Evo Morales which would create an inter-institutional border directorate (‘Dirección General de Fronteras’), tasked with monitoring the country’s borders with Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Peru. Romero’s announcement comes amid other clear by attempts by the government to crack down on smuggling and other crimes, and a shoot-out involving suspected members of the Brazilian criminal gang Primer Comando de la Capital (PCC) (see sidebar) suggests that this cooperation is as crucial as ever.
