In brief: Peru, Venezuela

Peru: The government has dismissed Katherine Ampuero, the special counsel appointed to investigate the government corruption scheme centred on Brazilian engineering firm Odebrecht. Justice Minister Marisol Pérez Tello announced Ampuero’s dismissal for blocking Odebrecht’s sale of its local irrigation arm, Olmos, which Pérez said damaged the local economy and could increase unemployment. Pérez also dismissed the head of the state’s legal defence council (CDJE), Julia Príncipe, for refusing to sack Ampuero. The dismissals have sparked criticism from congress that the executive led by President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski is meddling with the ongoing Odebrecht investigations. Now, congress’ anti-corruption committee is assessing whether to suspend Pérez for unfair dismissal.
