In brief: El Salvador, Guatemala

El Salvador: El Salvador’s national export and investment agency, Proesa, has held a trade & investment forum organised in coordination with the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT). According to a Proesa press release, the aim of the El Salvador-China Trade & Investment Forum is to promote opportunities of cooperation, trade, and investment between the two countries which do not have official diplomatic relations. El Salvador recognises Taiwan, as a separate country, as do its Central American neighbours, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua; while last month Panama switched its allegiance from Taiwan to mainland China. The investment forum was attended by more than 100 Chinese participants from sectors including business, government and NGOs. At the forum the two government agencies signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to strengthen cooperation in trade and investment. In 2016 El Salvador exported US$6.1m worth of goods to China – mainly paper products, agro-industrial products, and scrap aluminium.
