Bolivia: The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (Unodc) has released its latest Coca Crop Monitoring Survey in Bolivia, which shows that coca bush cultivation was up 14% in Bolivia in 2016 compared with the previous year. In this period, the surface area under coca cultivation increased from 20,200 hectares (ha) to 23,100ha, following five years of continuous reduction (2011-2015). In 2016, the Survey detected a net increase of 2,900ha of coca bush cultivation and the Bolivian government reported a 40% reduction in eradication of illegal coca crops from 11,020 to 6,577ha. The Unodc report also shows that while coca leaf and cocaine paste seizures fell by 2% and 4%, respectively, from 362 to 353 tonnes (t) and from around 12.7t to 12.2t, seizures of cocaine hydrochloride increased by 107%, from around 8.6t to 17.7t.
