Gov’t claims significant fall in crime rates

Argentina registered the third-lowest crime rates in Latin America in 2016. This is what the latest official crime data produced by Argentina’s national statistics institute (Indec) purportedly shows. The positive result has been hailed by the government led by President Mauricio Macri, who vowed to improve public security after he assumed office in December 2015. This provides a timely political fillip for the Macri administration as Argentina prepares to hold midterm federal legislative elections in October. However, the proximity of the elections has led some to question the accuracy of the data presented by Indec.
