Primaries spell more problems for the Nueva Mayoría

At the start of this month, Chile’s main centre-right opposition coalition Chile Vamos and the newer left-wing opposition Frente Amplio (FA) coalition held party primaries to pick their candidates ahead of the November presidential elections. The victories of former president Sebastián Piñera (2010-2014) in the Chile Vamos contest and radio journalist Beatriz Sánchez in the FA contest, were not surprising. However, the decision by the ruling Nueva Mayoría leftist coalition not to take part appears to have backfired given the resultant surge of support for the FA: opinion polls released since the contest show Sánchez continuing to build her lead over the presidential candidate backed by most of the Nueva Mayoría parties – well-known television journalist and independent national senator Alejandro Guillier.
