In brief: Mexico

*The former governor of Veracruz state Javier Duarte (2010-2016) was extradited from Guatemala back to Mexico on 17 July. Duarte, a former member of Mexico’s federally ruling Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI), who has been on the run since last year, initially fought extradition following his arrest in Guatemala in April, before unexpectedly agreeing to it on 27 June. Duarte will now stand trial in Mexico on charges of embezzlement, influence trafficking, illicit enrichment, illicit association, and dereliction of duty, as well as money laundering and organised crime; charges that Duarte denies.
