*The Brazilian government and the European Union have presented a joint plan to the World Trade Organization (WTO) to reform global agricultural subsidies. The aims of the proposal are to limit market distortions, and level the playing field in agricultural trade by helping out developing countries, which would be free from subsidy limits until they become competitive. The proposal, backed by Colombia, Peru, and Uruguay, should be discussed at a ministerial meeting of the WTO in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in December.
