Oaxaca state governor Alejandro Murat Hinojosa has announced the construction of a new 300km canal across the state that will link the Pacific port city of Salina Cruz in Oaxaca to Coatzacoalcos, the port city on the Gulf of Mexico located in the neighbouring Veracruz state. Murat said that the works for what he described as ‘Mexico’s Panama Canal’ will begin soon and that the federal government has already pledged M$400m (US$17.3m) for the project.
