Colombia: The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (Unodc) has released its latest Colombia Cultivation Survey, produced by the Integrated System for Monitoring Illicit Crops (Simci), which shows that there has been a 52% increase in total coca cultivation area in Colombia – from 96,000 hectares (ha) in 2015 to 146,000ha in 2016. The Unodc report estimates Colombia’s potential cocaine production at 866 tonnes (t), up 34% compared with 2015. The Unodc report notes that while the latest survey results are disappointing, “there are positives”, including a 49% increase in seizures of cocaine in Colombia over the period – from 253t confiscated in 2015 to 378t in 2016.
