Mexico and US sign energy accord

Development: On 13 July, Mexico’s energy secretary Pedro Joaquín Coldwell and his visiting US counterpart Rick Perry signed an accord designed to strengthen bilateral energy security, interconnection, and integration in an effort to drive the economic development of both countries.

Significance: The accord signed by Coldwell and Perry is yet another instance of the US government’s attempt in recent weeks to deepen bilateral cooperation with Mexico in a variety of spheres, including public security and combating drug-trafficking. This looks like a conscious effort to demonstrate that bilateral ties have not been impaired by verbal sparring over President Donald Trump’s determination to expand a border wall with Mexico or the impending renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta). Trump also succeeded in reducing tension yesterday by making it clear, for the first time (from his lips at least), that the proposed wall would not need to extend along the entirety of the shared border.
