In brief: Chile/Bolivia

Chile/Bolivia: Chile’s foreign minister Heraldo Muñoz has reiterated his government’s commitment to holding a border committee meeting to include officials from both the Chilean and Bolivian governments. Both governments are claiming credit for calling the meeting, which is scheduled to take place on 25 July in the Bolivian department of Santa Cruz. It follows the recent arrest and release of two Chilean Carabineros (military police) detained by Bolivian authorities, who accused them of illegally entering Bolivian territory, and the arrest mid-March of nine Bolivian nationals by Chilean officials. The Bolivians, who were subsequently charged with smuggling, theft with intimidation, and illegal possession of weapons, returned to Bolivia late last month after the Bolivian government led by President Evo Morales paid a fine of some US$50,000.
