US pledges support for ‘Northern Triangle’; doubts persist

A two-day “Conference on Prosperity and Security in Central America” took place last month in Florida, Miami. Held to discuss regional issues, including security, migration, and development, the joint US-Mexican sponsored summit was attended by top officials from the US, Mexico, and the ‘Northern Triangle’ (El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras). While it produced various agreements, the pledges of US support come as the US administration led by President Donald Trump, which is operating an ‘America First’ policy and calling for more hardline actions to stop illegal migration (such as constructing a wall on the US border with Mexico and stepping up deportations from the US), is proposing to reduce cooperation with the sub-region.
