* The head of science and technology for Rio de Janeiro state, Pedro Fernandes, has resigned in protest at the way in which state resources are managed during times of economic austerity. In an interview with news site G1, Fernandes said he was “disappointed” the government had delayed salary payments for those working under his department, including university professors. Instead, it prioritised payments in other departments, meaning that teachers at state high schools, working under the education ministry, were paid on time whilst university professors have not been paid for several months. Despite leaving his post in local government, Fernandes has said he will continue as a federal deputy in congress.
