In brief: Bolivia, Colombia, Peru

Bolivia: The Bolivian police has presented a plan to President Evo Morales to create an inter-institutional brigade, the ‘Dirección General de Fronteras’, to monitor the country’s borders with Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Peru. According to official sources, Bolivia loses at least US$1bn per annum due to smuggling, while private companies estimate losses greater than US$1.5bn. The plan will involve the combined cooperation of the Bolivian armed forces, the migration service, the national hydrocarbon agency, the highway administration, Bolivian customs, and municipal authorities. Interior Minister Carlos Romero stated that such a plan was necessary as levels of smuggling are “permanently” rising.
