Mexican press censures Peña Nieto after Trump meeting

Development: On 7 July, Mexico’s President Enrique Peña Nieto met his US peer Donald Trump in an eagerly anticipated meeting on the sidelines of the G-20 summit in Hamburg, Germany.

Significance: The 40-minute face-to-face conversation marked the first time presidents Peña Nieto and Trump had met in person since the latter’s inauguration in January. Five months earlier Peña Nieto had been compelled to cancel a scheduled visit to the White House after some candid and confrontational rhetoric from Trump, especially on Twitter, relating to his plan for a border wall and insistence that Mexico would finance it.
